6 Factors to Consider Before Installing a Pond Fountain

March 6, 2023 Posted by PondMedics Blog

Installing a pond fountain helps to create a tranquil and inviting sanctuary in your yard. Adding the sights and sounds of running water can turn any outdoor space into an oasis for relaxation or entertainment. As part of this project, there are several important factors to consider.

installing a pond fountain

#1 Size of Pond

Your fountain needs to be sized appropriately for the size of the pond. The fountain can’t effectively aerate or circulate water if it is too small. On the flip side, if the fountain is too large, it will create too much turbulence disturbing aquatic plants. By considering the size of your pond, you can choose a fountain that provides adequate water circulation without sacrificing the quality of life for other organisms living in your pond.

#2 Depth of Pond

The depth of a pond is essential because the water level strongly impacts the fountain’s performance. The minimum water level should be at least 18 inches. Damage to the water pump can quickly occur due to low-pressure levels if the depth of the water is less than 18 inches.

Most manufacturers recommend using pumps designed for 3-6 feet depths for best results. This helps ensure a consistent and powerful flow throughout the entire fountain system. Considering the depth of a pond is vital when installing a pond fountain to ensure proper operation and optimal performance.

#3 Location of Pond

The amount of sunlight ponds receive affects how fast the water evaporates and which types of plants and fish thrive in the water. Be sure to install the pond fountain away from underground utilities and drainage systems. Installing too close can lead to potential flooding or unexpected utility bills. Ensure all electrical components are safely installed as well.

Check on zoning regulations, especially for pond fountains installed in residential and commercial areas. Pond fountains require a dedicated space at a reasonable distance from other features or structures.

The area for the fountain should have enough room for the water to circulate and move, as well as enough space for any necessary pumps or equipment needed to power the fountain. To prevent flooding during storms and high rainfall, ensure there is drainage around the pond to manage overflow.

Water laws governing the more than 1 million ponds and “stock tanks” in Texas can be complex. Ensure you follow all local regulations and codes  when creating a pond and installing a fountain to avoid fines and penalties or costly rework.

#4 Amount of Sunlight on the Pond

Sunlight helps promote photosynthesis, which produces oxygen for plant life in the water. An adequate amount of sunlight will keep aquatic plants healthy. This helps avoid excessive algae growth by providing just enough light to support the growth of beneficial species. Too much light can lead to abundant algae, creating unsightly build-up on surfaces or clogging pumps and filters.

#5 Type of Pond Fountain

The type of fountain affects the look, sound, and maintenance of your pond. Different types of fountains provide different aesthetics and sound effects. Some create ripples, while others shoot jets into the air. Certain types require more maintenance than others due to debris build-up or nozzle clogs.

Floating Fountain

Floating fountains sit atop the water’s surface and produce a lively spray or cascade as water is pushed up from below. This type of fountain provides both aeration and decoration for your pond.

Submersible Fountains

Submersible fountains produce an eye-catching splash in your pond with minimal effort. These fountains are submerged entirely underwater, pushing jets of water into the air in a vibrant display.

LED Lighting

LED lighting fountains feature LED lights used to give your pond an enchanting nighttime glow. The lights reflect off the water’s surface, creating an atmospheric ambiance.

Spillover

Spillover fountains allow you to create a waterfall effect by letting water flow over its edges into a lower pool below. This creates a stunning visual effect.

#6 Cost of Pond Fountain Maintenance and Repair

The maintenance cost for a pond fountain can vary greatly depending on the specific type of fountain and the pond size. Factors such as placement, pump size, and fountain construction materials will determine the total amount spent each year from hundreds of dollars into the thousands.

If water-quality issues in your pond or require special attention, such as debris or algae growth, this could also lead to additional costs. You may need to pay for chemicals to help improve water clarity and prevent issues such as algal blooms or skimming off debris from the surface. Periodic inspection and cleaning of intake screens might be necessary if they become clogged with dirt or debris.

Long downtimes are common since there aren’t always technicians or parts available to service pond fountains. One way to minimize fountain maintenance costs as well as downtime is to use a subscription service. Fountain Freedom services pond fountains with affordable pricing and strong uptime guarantees.

Benefits of Installing Pond Fountains

Installing a fountain in your pond can bring vital benefits that help create a healthy ecosystem. They can keep water aerated and minimize the growth of algae (as well making it hard for mosquito larvae to survive).

At PondMedics, we provide engineering, management, and consulting services to clients planning, designing, or renovating surface water resources such as ponds, lakes, and streams. Please don’t hesitate to contact us to see how we can help you install a fountain in your pond.
